Are storage areas clean and tidy? Do not let rags or paper accumulate.
Are all flammable liquids stored in approved containers, outside of your home?
Do you have smoke detectors installed? At least one on every floor?
Do you have at least one approved fire extinguisher on each floor? Is it charged?
Do you have your chimney and stove pipes cleaned and inspected regularly?
Have you reviewed your prize possessions? Consider storage in a safety deposit boxes and make a list of items to evaluate (personal papers, photo albums, etc.)
Is your house address number clearly visible from the main road? Should be a minimum of 20 cm in height on contrasting background.
Have you done an inspection of your home recently? Should inspect inside at least twice a year and outside at least every spring.
Have you practices your evacuation plan yet? At least two ways out of each room to a predetermined meeting spot.
Wildfire Safety Precautions
Do you have cedar shakes or shingles? Have they been treated with fire retardant?
Are eaves, attic and foundation openings screened?
Do you clean your roof and gutters regularly?
Is there a fuel free area around your house? trees should be at least 3 meters from buildings and spaced at least 3 meters apart. They should also be pruned up to 2 meters from the ground.
Have you disposed of dry ground fuels such as grass, branches and rotten logs? Consider fire resistant plants and other landscaping options.
Is your firewood stacked at least 15 meters away from any buildings?
Do you have a ladder, fire fighting tools, and garden hose readily available? Consider a back-up water supply.
